USC warriors spike 1st win vs. legends
THE topseed team, the Dewfoam-backed University of San Carlos (USC) men’s volleyball team, survived a bull strong Tinong’s Bakery-Mandaue Selection team to log its first win in the 1st M.Lhuillier Kwarta Padala Open Indoor Volleyball Tournament last Sunday at the Aznar Coliseum.
USC Spiking Warriors, the reigning men’s champion of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. sneaked past Tinong’s, 22-25, 25-18, 28-26, 25-20.

Tinong’s is composed of spikers who do not belong to a regular team anymore, but they are household names in the volleyball circle. Most of them are former RP team members.
Legends in their own rights, they are Jerome Capada, a former libero of the RP team, Julius Acojedo, former University of San Jose Recoletos star player and his brother Yeyeng, former Airforce and RP team mainstay, and Ronald Moreño USJR quicker.
Gameplan
While Capada led Tinong’s charge, on the other side of the court, Norvie Labuga, USC’s coach, was at the forefront of his team’s offensive. The two once worked together to win the national title for the Nestea Beach Volleyball for USJ-R.
Capada put up a good show in the first set as he played in his usual form with his trademark powerful jumpserves and strong and unpredictable crosscourt kills that left USC dumbfounded.
However, not to be outdone, champion team USC, led by Labuga, overhauled the first set setback to take the next three sets to take the win.
USC’s comeback was led by the powerful foursome of Labuga, Jerone Maestre, Carlo Tecson, Cesafi MVP Roderick Arenasa, who became unstoppable from the frontlines.
Sidelights
In the other men’s contest, ML Cebu Dried Mango Delights/USJ-R takes the lead in its bracket following an easy 25-20, 25-14, 25-23 win over Classical Touch of Alan Choachuy. It was the second loss for Classical Touch.
Coach Grace Antigua’s USJ-R squad now shares the top spot with Team Liloanon with identical 2-0 winning slate.
In the final offering last Sunday, the girls team of Arthor-University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) of coach Jordan Paca, rebounded from its loss with an emphatic thrashing of Rich Media Digital Ads-USC, 25-18, 25-8, 25-9, to now sport a 1-1 record. It was Richmedia-USC’s second loss in the competition. (MCB)
