Tuesday, May 15, 2007 Success inspires regular dancesport workshop
THE overwhelming reception of the Cebuanos to the Summer Dancesport Barangay Workshop encouraged Dancesport Team Cebu City (DTCC) officials to turn the summer event into a regular activity.
More than 1,000 newly converted dancesport enthusiasts trooped to the workshop’s culminating activity at the Cebu Coliseum.
It was, according to DTCC director Edward Hayco, the biggest they’ve had so far in the workshop’s five years.
“It is overwhelming. The coliseum was simply crowded,” said Hayco.
Idea
The participants are products from the free summer classes conducted by volunteer teachers. They come from 19 barangays, some as far as the mountain barangays of Talamban.
Hayco added that the reception had given them a light bulb moment, as he together with other DTCC pillars Eleanor Hayco, Ricca Alix and coach Loloi Rendon, decided to hold the workshops during the weekends within the school year.
“For a start, we will be focusing on five barangays where the weekend classes will be held,” said Hayco.
These barangays will be Cogon Ramos, Mabolo, Guadalupe, Tejero and Bulacao. Classes will start this Saturday.
Sidetrip
Hayco admitted that the additional activity could be another burden to bear for DTCC, which already has its hands full with the preparation for an international competition later this year.
“This will be a little sidetrip. But our instructors are very willing to teach,” added Hayco.
Since DTCC funds are directed at the hosting of the international event, they will have no more budget for the weekly classes.
“During the culminating, we have seen at least 200 from over a thousand, who have a lot of prospect to making it big time,” said Hayco.
The 60 volunteer teachers also include young DTCC athletes and will start their weekly ritual this Saturday.
Meanhwile, Hayco also announced that they welcome beginners anytime.
“Sometimes people will have apprehensions in joining because they feel that these workshops are only for the advanced student. It is not and we accept anyone, anytime,” Hayco added. (MCB)
