Husband-wife team wins in Aloguinsan

ALOGUINSAN voters picked a husband-and-wife tandem to lead the southern town for the next three years, as Mayor Cynthia Moreno was reelected, with her husband Augustus Ceasar Moreno winning as vice mayor.

In Pilar, Jesus Fernandez Jr. replaced his late father and former mayor of the town. Jesus Jr. ran unopposed. His vice mayor is Rommel Tajo, who served as acting mayor for months when Jesus Sr. died last year.

One southern family, however, did not fare as well.

Oslob Mayor Amelito Abines and his uncle, Vice Mayor Regino Abines, both lost their reelection bids. It would have been their third term.

Regino’s sister Estudita Abines-Dee also lost her bid for mayor, while his wife, Anunsacion, also did not make it to the town council.

Amelito’s brother, Jose Dodjie, ran for councilor as an independent candidate but also did not make it to the top eight.

Amelito lost to former Oslob vice mayor Ronald Guaren by 2,380 votes, while Regino lost to Guaren’s runningmate, Pacifica Letigio, by 1,120 votes.

Amelito garnered 3,232 votes while Guaren had 5,612. Regino, on the other hand, got 3,235, while Letigio had 4,355.

Before his stint as mayor, it was Amelito’s father Emiliano who controlled Oslob.

Amelito and Jose Dodjie are the nephews of former second district congressman Crisologo Abines. Regino is Crisologo’s brother.

Crisologo is now running for congressman in the second district. Although there is no final official tally yet, former governor Pablo Garcia has claimed victory in the 15-town district.

Crisologo’s children also lost in Samboan and Santander, which they controlled for years before.

Marybeth Abines-Santos, Crisologo’s eldest child, lost to Santander Mayor Wilson Wenceslao while John Carl, his youngest child, also lost to Raymond Calderon in Samboan.

His other son James Arnold, who is the former mayor of Santander, also lost in his bid for councilor. (MBG)
