alergiasis-opositossexus
By Chassy Cortes
UP Mass Comm intern

I HAD this very interesting YM chat with my very good friend on Christmas eve. It was Christmas alright, but it felt like Lenten for both of us. (Jesus, I know you’d punish me for feeling that way during your day, but I definitely didn’t forget it was your birthday.) I was heartbroken that time and what better way to get rid of the loneliness than to confide in someone who feels exactly the same.

As always, a favorite topic among ladies is MEN. I don’t know if their complexity is amazing or just plain pain-in-the-ass. I bet they feel the same way about us women. This “battle” between the people from MARS—men—and the people from VENUS— women—just cannot find its way to rest. Thus, giving rise to the arguments like who is the better lover, who cheats more often, who is more faithful and blabbity-blabbity-blah! Well let’s accept it, both can be the best lovers, can cheat, can be faithful and the rest follows.

Then I wonder. If men and women are capable of hurting each other and hate each other, can this possibly cause a disease or disorder? Psychological, that is. If there is, I’d like to call it “alergiasis-opositossexus©."

alergiasis-opositossexus. Caused by deception, unmet expectations, closed line of communication, betrayal, lack of intimacy and irreconcilable differences. Patient may experience total emotional breakdown, which may lead to paranoia. Degree of paranioa depends on the patient’s ability to move on and how soon he/she can move on. In worse cases, patients who cannot move on suffer from loss of hope, become delusional and are convinced to wipe out his/her existence from the social spectrum.

alergiasis-opositossexus. Simply known as heartbreak. I have managed to give this seemingly very complex yet easily acquired psychological “disease” (so to speak) a scientific name–which is, by the way, as complicated as its nature. Having been exposed to this phenomenon a couple of times last year, I have to say it is the worst breakdown among all breakdowns because it brings the rest of the kinds of breakdowns imaginable.

The feeling of having lost someone or something special despite all the hard work of keeping it together and despite all the sacrifices done just to save it from extinction is much devastating than seeing your archenemy wearing the exact same shoes you bought yesterday. Okay, that comparison was off.

What makes it different from the other breakdowns and mess-ups in life is knowing that you have invested everything for that one person. Yet, no matter how hard you try to hold on to it and in the end you lose it, you lose everything that you are, almost.

Knowing the effects of this so-called disease, we still do not take necessary precautions. We let our hearts hang loose, loose enough that it is easy for anyone to just grab it out of us. New owners are then given the authority to do whatever they want. So by the time they have grown tired of keeping it and decide to own another, they can just drop it and return it in its ugliest shape.

The best possible precaution is to know when enough is enough. But when is enough, enough? When push comes to shove, get out of the pit and watch push shove what makes up the pit. Makes sense? It’s not supposed to.
