Monday, May 28, 2007 Costanilla: For Yoyoy By Sam Costanilla spotlight
AS I promised last Monday, today’s column shall continue to publish the views of the rest of my texters on the issue of reviving the Cebuano/Visayan movie industry. US-based doctor and teleseries actor Charles Nadela wrote that with a good script, daring talents and the right funding, we can produce world-class local films. Another doctor, Henry Yu texted that as Cebuanos, we should patronize Visayan films by watching them. He also suggested that we should live like true Cebuanos in words and in deed.
ACTOR-singing doctor Warfe Engracia says one way of appreciating the beauty of the dialect is the revival of the Cebuano/Visayan film industry. Deejay William “Billy” Sienes of WRock FM thinks a digital film competition with attractive prizes is the key to the eventual revival of the local movie business while television station manager Edward Abad believes local flicks with simple dialogs are better appreciated even by non-Cebuano moviegoers when these are screened nationwide.

SHOW promoter-television host Marivir Montebon emphasizes that a good concept, interested investors and an effective marketing strategy are vital elements to ensure the revival of the local movie industry while singer-artist Dante Luzon suggests that localproducers, directors and writers should join hands and that there should be full tri-media support as far as publicity of local productions is concerned.

MILLIONS of fans, including this writer, of Bohol’s pride Yoyoy Villame are saddened by his passing. How can we forget the novelty composer-singer’s unique way of perking up the airlanes with his songs? Yoyoy is gone, but his brand of entertainment stays forever. Two years ago, I emceed a program in Mandaue city where he and fellow novelty singer Max Surban were the performers, and I was able to observe Yoyoy up close and personal. He was actually the serious and silent type but once he holds the microphone and steps onstage, Yoyoy could easily make any program full of non-stop laughter and fun.

WE are glad that the Junior Chamber International-Mandaue is coming up with an event aptly titled Music Made in Cebu: A Tribute to Yoyoy. The event is on July 14, 4-7 p.m., at the SM City Trade Hall and that Max Surban, Junior Kilat, Smooth Friction, Southwings, Brownian Method, Kadangyan and the Dos Compañeros comic duo will also perform Yoyoy selections. His daughter Hannah will also sing. This writer and the lovely singer Chivas Nadela have been invited to emcee the show and perform one Yoyoy composition. For sponsorship, kindly call tel. no. 4158085 or 86 local 106.

THIS former singer here claims to have almost completed his own alphabet. Nobody believes him--he’s into drugs.
