Cebu gets excluded from list of food-poor provinces in RP

CEBU is not among the 54 areas considered by the Department of Education (DepEd) as food-poor provinces in the country for the school year 2007 to 2008.

DepEd divides food-poor provinces into three categories.

Cebu is not in any category.

Pinoy Votes: Sun.Star Election 2007

There were 10 areas considered as the first priority that should be given immediate attention to address hunger affecting them.

Twenty provinces are in second priority while 24 are in the third priority.

In Central Visayas, Negros Oriental (priority 2) and Bohol (priority 3) were included.

Work-conference

DepEd says it will conduct a work-conference on the Food for School (FSP) program for an effective and efficient implementation of government’s anti-hunger program.

FSP was launched in 2004 as an intervention program to address hunger among preschoolers, day care pupils and grade one students.

The towns of Aloguinsan, Boljoon, Santander, Tabuelan, and Tudela in Cebu were beneficiaries last school year.

While Cebu is not presently considered a food-poor area, division and regional representatives from Central Visayas will still attend the conference on May 30 to June 1 at the Ecotech Center in Lahug, Cebu City.

For regional nutritionist Grace Espos, there may still be areas in Cebu that will be beneficiaries of FSP this school year, although they will not be considered a priority. (NRC)
