UNIVERSITY of the Visayas tennis team mainstay Larry Antigua finally snags the most coveted Boys 18-Under crown, after winning his championship assignment of the Prince Next Generation tennis tournament yesterday at the Casino Español.
Antigua, who in the last two tournaments defeated seeded players on his way to the championship round only to lose the final match, defeated Ryan Repunte, 6-4, 6-4.
Antigua hit two birds with one stone with his latest exploit. He defeated Repunte, the tournament top seed, and avenged his loss in the Gullas Cup, where Repunte defeated him in the championship round.
Antigua now stands 3-1 in his winning record over Repunte.
Meanwhile, after a successful stint in the Arafura Games, Kristel Mae Buena-cosa extended her winning streak after grabbing the Girls 18 crown as she sneaked past Eloisa Collo.
Buenacosa of University of San Carlos South Campus had won two gold medals and one bronze in her Arafura Games stint the other week in Darwin, Australia, where she and the rest of the RP team went up against players from different nations.
Collo of Davao City goes home empty-handed as she received another beating from another Cebuana, Sally Mae Siso 6-0, 6-0.
Siso is the only player to have pulled off a twin kill in the competition as she also claimed the title in the Girls 14-Under following a 6-0, 6-3 trouncing of Cindy Gerapusco.
Siso’s older brother Bernardine Niño also dominated his age group after bagging the Boys 14-Under division title with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Christian John Cabahug. Niño defeated Cabahug’s twin brother Christian Paul in the semifinals.
Vince Mark Tabotabo also continued to dominate the 10-under field, this time at the expense of Crissiane Kintanar, 6-2, 6-1.
Kintanar bounced back from the loss, and took home the Girls 12-under division title after defeating Khylle Longakit 6-1, 6-3.
Fritz Satera, on the other hand, had to overcome a bad start before puling out a three set cardiac win over Polomolok’s Kurt Gerapusco, 0-6, 6-4, 13-11.
Jayvee Canoy overpowered Lowell Lloyd Cañete 6-4, 6-7, 10-7 to win the Boys 16 crown. (MCB)
