Monday, May 28, 2007 World Cup Boxing to be hosted in Sacramento
IT’S a bye-bye to the hosting of the World Cup Boxing as the Golden Boy Promotions had decided to take the Mexico vs. the Philippines rivalry to the US.
GBP Promotions issued a press release the other day telling boxing fans that the two-nation boxing spectacle will be hosted in Sacramento, on August 11.
However, this is not final yet and if Cebuano promoter Sammy Gello-ani receives financial pledges and the government writes off the cost of the event, then the World Cup boxing will be here in the Philippines.
However, if it does take place in the US, Cebu’s foremost boxing patron and ALA Boys mentor Antonio Lopez Aldeguer wants to take the world title shot for Boholano ring star Rey “Boom-Boom” Bautista against WBO Super-bantamweight champion Daniel Ponce de Leon to the Philippines.
“I asked Eric (Gomez) of the Golden Boy Promotions that if ever they will finally decide to bring the World Cup to the US to leave the Bautista-Ponce De Leon fight to the Philippines,” Aldeguer told Sun.Star Cebu yesterday.
Bautista was named as the mandatory challenger to de Leon following his overwhelming victory over Sergio Manuel Medina in an elimination bout last May 6 in Las Vegas, Nevada. (RCM)
