Wednesday, May 30, 2007 Center uses adventure as therapy
IN LINE with its commitment to bring the best possible treatment program for the rehabilitation of chemical dependents, The Recovery House has introduced an adventure-based therapy in the aftercare and continuing care of clients.
The center, which is also commemorating its 5th year, said the adventure-based therapy uses a wide variety of initiatives and activities that have been developed in the areas of acquaintance, deinhibitizers, trust, communication, decision making, problem solving, social responsibility and personal responsibility.
The clients will learn how to react to conflicts and understand factors that have either encouraged or prevented them from having satisfying relationships.
The activities focus on group problem -solving initiatives that provide active involvement, personal and group reflection and evaluation.
The clients will also be taught to overcome their fears and reassess their self-perceptions.
They could also examine their limitations and abilities and learn to rely on themselves and the group to carry out a variety of tasks assigned to them.
Strengths
Adventure therapy, according to Vicente “Tico” Aldanese of The Recovery House, attemps to build on the recovering addict’s strengths to address both the current issues affecting recovery and those that may rise later.
The basic model provides people with opportunities and skills to deal with different situations.
Throughout the therapy, the recovering addict is provided with experiences that provoke strong feelings and encouraged to to experience and share the feelings.
