Speak out: Piracy in Cebu By Dina Layam Aznar Road, Cebu City
I COMMEND the Optic Media Board (OMB) and local authorities for raiding retailers and sellers of pirated software and movies recently here in Cebu.
For some time, these illegal products threatened lawful businesses and spoiled local consumers.
Pinoy Votes: Sun.Star Election 2007 Coverage
Back then, I wondered why local authorities did not act despite the fact that these pirated DVDs were sold and displayed very openly in public.
With the raids that just happened, my confidence with the authorities is back.
I suggest to the OMB that they should conduct more surveillance and raids for the long term.
They should also check out new places like that establishment in Mabolo where pirated DVD vendors have emerged.
At the same time they should rid the city of street vendors selling those bootleg discs.
Piracy is never practical and it violates intellectual property rights.
The more raids, the better it is for lawful businesses and local consumers.
By eradicating piracy, we can make Cebu more attractive to international software and entertainment companies.
We can also revive Cebuano cinema.
