Speak out: Akbayan’s win
By Ernie Al Ometer-Edralin
Campaign Coordinator for Cebu Province

THE just-concluded electoral exercise exposed, among others, how traditional politics invaded, and to a certain extent made a mockery of the party-list system, which supposedly represents the broad interests of marginalized and underrepresented sectors and their struggles for progressive policies and reforms.

In the said elections, progressive party-list organizations like Akbayan was target of negative campaigns, harassment and votes shaving aimed at lessening the group’s representation, if not to scuttle its participation in the system.

Despite all these, Akbayan survived.

And even with only one representative in Congress in the person of Rep. Risa Hontiveros-Baraquel in the next three years, the party will continue to serve its purpose and do what it started since 1998.

On behalf of Akbayan! Citizens Action Party-Cebu, I thank you for the continued support and trust in the party's aspirations, programs, and principled positions.

The fight continues.
