THE Filipino boxers’ string of upsets in Australia continued after 20-year-old Aril Omongos scored a second round technical knockout win over the reigning WBF Asia-Pacific light welterweight champion Turkish-Australian Jed Syger yesterday.
Omongos, who just scored his third victory, two by knockouts, stunned the heavily favored Syger with a relentless barrage of punches forcing the referee to stop the carnage at the 1:44 mark of the second round of the scheduled six rounder non-title match.
The Zamboanga City puncher, who is currently fighting for the Dido Bohol Stable of Sydney, arrested a three-fight losing streak to improve his ring record to 3-7, 2 KOs as the 23-year-old Syger fell to 9-2, with 2 KOs.
Omongos’ last victory was over Theophilus Quage in Oct. 28 last year by a first round knockout. After that win, he lost his next three outings before he scored the stunning win over Syger. (RCM)
