Lagman splits games in Head Penn tennis

JACOB Lagman split his matches in the second to the last day of the Head Penn Olivarez Tennis Tournament yesterday in Parañaque City.

Lagman, of St. Benedict Childhood Learning Center, asserted his dominance in the Boys 12-Under but faltered in his bid in an older age group.

Lagman has been eyeing revenge against John Mavrick Ribaya, who is the only player to have defeated him in the 12-Under division. Lagman lost to Ribaya two weeks ago in their championship match in another tournament.

And revenge was what he got, when Lagman cut short Ribaya’s streak over him with a 6-2, 6-2 beating. The win earned Lagman a trip to the final round against Hans Asistio today.

Later in the day, Lagman failed to stamp his mastery in another age group as he was overpowered in the semifinals of the Boys 14-Under division.

Lagman bowed to Tim Polero in straight sets, 2-6, 3-6. This is the second straight time Polero dominated the Cebuano, who lost to Polero in the same day he lost to Ribaya in a previous tournament.

Awardee

The young netter, who is an awardee of the Sportswriters Association of Cebu, recently came off a successful stint in Baguio, where he won the Boys 12-Under title while his older brother Julius, who topped the Boys 18-Under.

In this current tournament however, Julius suffered an early exit following his quarterfinal defeat to Akio Sy. (MCB)
