Nierras joins RP team in Taiwan event

CEBUANO sprinter Julius Nierras will join 10 others in the 2007 Chinese Taipei International Athletics Championships this Saturday Taiwan.

Nierras, a former University of Cebu track star and a Southeast Asian Games medalist, will be competing in the 400 meter run alongside Jimar Aing. The team will be leaving for China today.

The other members of the team are Joebert Delicano, who will compete in triple jump; Danilo Fresnido and Rosie Villarito, who are playing in the javelin throw; Arnold Villarube and Albert Salcedo, who will join the 100 meter dash; and Midel Dique, who will compete in the 800 meter run.

Coaches

The team will be joined by coaches Agustin Jarina, Romeo Gido and Sean Guevarra.

Meanwhile, Philippine Amateur Track and Field Association (Patafa) welcomed into its fold Antonio Yang Sr., who was appointed vice chairperson of the athletics association by Patafa head Go Teng Kok during their monthly board meeting Yang owns the footwear conglomerate Islander Footwear Manufacturing Corporation and is executive adviser of the Federation of Filipino-Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industries, and the Philippine Tang Yu Foundation Inc. and is also president of the Zenco Sales Inc.

Appointment

For his appointment, Yang, in a press statement, promised the Islander company will be supporting the RP athletics team, guaranteeing their trainings and exposures abroad to prepare for the Sea Games later this year and for the most elusive gold in the Olympics next year.
