Serna: Boring, boring
By Roger Serna

IF you had been monitoring the latest development of the coming Miss Universe pageant then you must have already known that aside from Bb. Pilipinas-Universe Therese Licaros, there are two other candidates to the long-running global beauty search who have Filipino blood going through their system.

They’re Misses Norway and Germany. Beauty pageant crazy Filipinos are hoping to see another Filipina wear the coveted crown since it was last won by Margie Moran in 1973.

Will the long wait end this year? Cross your fingers as we look forward to the live telecast on Tuesday morning over ABS-CBN and a primetime telecast at Studio 23 a few hours after.

Has Kuya run out of novel ideas to keep the second season of Pinoy Big Brother attractive to televiewers? The latest development in the so-called teleserye ng totoong buhay, instead of surprising its ardent and passionate supporters as intended, has shocked these unsuspecting followers (including this fanatic of sorts) with the balikbahay twist that brought previously evicted housemates back to the Bahay ni Kuya.

Some suspect the producers are favoring one of these evictees. Others voice out harsher suspicions and judgments. A colleague described the twist as insensitive, inconsiderate and disrespectful.

I can still recall former housemate Uma Khouny when he last visited Cebu for a guest appearance in the local teleseries Amor Chicko say that the first edition can never be matched nor duplicated in many aspects. True.

Another show is slated to replace PBB Season 2’s Saturday slot starting July 7(do we hear sighs of relief?). This is the second version of the successful U Can Dance which aired some months back.

At least this one boasts of original ideas (as young director Alco Guerrero puts it) and breathtaking dance steps that will bring the real dancer in every participant to the fore.

The show’s hosts, model-endorsers Derek Ramsay and Iya Villania, together with Alco’s mom Chit Guerrero (she’s Cebu City South’s Councilor elect Yayoy Alcoseba’s sister) who is one of the show’s bigwigs and ace choreographer Maribeth Bichara (she’s one of the show’s judges) gamely answered questions thrown their directions by the Cebu media after a sumptuous lunch at Yayoy’s Resto-Grill three days before the elections.

Getting contestants from different regions is one of the innovations in the new version. Director Alco strives to make the show, which will run for 15 weeks, as original and as Pinoy as possible.

Derek says he’ll not just be hosting but will be dancing as well. So do with Iya. Chit Guerrero divulged that Iya was chosen as host for her being fashionable, a sought-after product endorser and having good moral character, among others.

Derek’s masculine appearance (to dispel misconceptions that dancing is not for the macho) in addition to the same qualities possessed by Iya made him a runaway choice as the show’s host.

As to the type of dances to be competed upon, it will be street ballroom (whatever that is) according to Bichara with liftings limited to only two. Don’t you think we’ll have many things to look forward to come July?

Has the Cebu press gone timid or were the members trying to impress the Manila guests that they’re a cut above their Manila counterparts? This was what struck me after the presscon of Paano Kita Iibigin held last weekend at a hotel in Lapulapu with its lead stars Regine Velasquez and Piolo Pascual in attendance.

I prepared at least three questions for Regine mostly about her much-talked-about-but-often-denied relationship with Ogie Alcasid. As for Piolo, my questions were mostly about the movie itself.

I was waiting for my turn to ask when somebody dissuaded me from asking personal questions. That did it! Instantly my enthusiasm vanished to thin air.

I don’t know about the others but the presscon was called off with none of the expected questions thrown to the laps of the moviestars. What a bore, in fact, it was one of, if not, the most boring presscons I have attended. Sigh!
