Cebu’s R Power fighters miss victory by a hairline

HIGHLY-TOUTED R Power squad, formerly known as Team Cebu City, had to settle for the runner-up spots losing to other teams by small margins in the 2007 Regional New Face of the Year Taekwondo Championships yesterday at the Cebu Doctor’s University gym.

In the elementary division, R Power bowed down to Avengers Taekwondo Club (ATC), which slipped past R Power by a hairline.

ATC, mentored by Avenger Alob, bagged the title after garnering a total of 49 points, just one point ahead of R Power team, which finished with 48 markers.

R-Power actually had more total number of medals compared to ATC, 16 to 11. However, a crucial gold medal difference spelled disaster for R Power.

ATC jins fished five gold medals (with 4 silvers, two bronzes), while R Power only had four golds, while carting away four silvers and eight bronzes.

ATC’s winning of the overall championship was behind the heroics of gold medal winners Myles Perez, Clement Tan, Levi Amante, Roland Mattsen and Clarisse Mirham, who topped in their respective classes.

Minglanilla Central School/ Active Fitness Gym (AFG), on the other hand, settled with third place honors after registering 43 points from the four golds, three silvers and six bronze medals that its jins won yesterday.

AFG then bounced back in the advanced division, which saw a close battle among the podium winners who narrowly escaped each other.

AFG squeezed past the gritty R Power with its 61 points. R Power was close behind with 59. At its heels is ATC and Junas Fitness Gym, locked together at the third spot with identical 58 points.

AFG coach Junrez Cananea topped this division after winning five golds, six silvers and eight bronze medals, to dodge R Power, which finished with five gold, five silver and nine bronze medals.

AFG banked on the sterling performances of its jins Jose Dinampo, Reinald Cabahug, Jana Lim and Alfred Lanas.

ATC won six golds, four silvers and 4 bronze medal haul, while Junas finished with 5-5-8 medal haul. (MCB)
