Vice guv spent P3.6M for reelection bid

A WEEK before the June 13 deadline for the filing of the statement of contributions and expenses, 38 of the 53 candidates for provincial positions have yet to comply with the requirement.

Yesterday, Vice Gov. Gregorio Sanchez Jr., Rep. Eduardo Gullas (1st District), PB member-elect Peter John Calderon (2nd district) and PB member-elect Wenceslao Gakit (6th District) filed their statements before the Comelec Provincial Office.

Pinoy Votes: Sun.Star Election 2007 Coverage

At least P3.6 million helped Sanchez get a fresh mandate. With a margin of more than 300,000 votes, he defeated Rep. Clavel Martinez last May 14 elections.

A candidate under a party is allowed to spend P3 for every registered voter in the area where he filed his certificate of candidacy.

The Province of Cebu has more than 1.6 million registered voters so Sanchez, a member of One Cebu-Kampi party, is allowed to spend up to P4.9 million.

Donation

Sanchez received P2.3 million in donations from Lacto Bacillus Pafi Techno Resources Corp, a health drink company that he owns but is being managed by his daughter, Gigi Sanchez-Zaballes.

He spent P2.1 million from the contributions, on top of the P1.5 million expenses he covered with his own money.

Of the amount, P255,800 went to remunerations, P286,225 for advertising and press releases and P195,988.10 for meetings and conferences.

He also spent P174,822.15 for honorarium; P166,080.90 for transportation and P152,704.82 for promotional materials.

Gullas declared that he spent P823,160 from personal funds. Most of these were used for salaries of poll watchers, at P279,800.

He also spent P242,840 for compensation of campaigners and campaign materials and sample ballots.

Calderon, on the other hand, spent P68,201 from personal funds, most of which went to gasoline (P35,000) and campaign materials (33,201).

He also spent P10,000 for the allowances of his staff.

Gakit declared that he spent P294,920, all from personal funds.

He, however, did not specify how he spent the money.

Magpale

Last Tuesday, PB Member Agnes Magpale of the fifth district and defeated congressional bet in the first district Felipe Concepcion also filed their respective statements of contributions and expenses.

Magpale declared that she spent P170,000 in the last elections.

She received P75,000 in contributions and P95,000 came from her personal funds.

Concepcion spent P263,860 from his personal funds and most of these went to food, labor and miscellaneous expenses (P120,875). (MBG)
