Serving one term as president of the Cebu Football Association (CebuFA) is enough for Jonathan Maximo, who said that he is no longer vying for the presidency in this year’s elections.
“It (four years) is too long. We are not paid to do this job and usually, one’s peak is during his first year. The excitement tapers off as time goes by,” said Maximo, who just came off a sabbatical in the US.
This year is an election year both for CebuFA, set in the middle of the year, and the Philippine Football Federation (PFF), which will hold its elections in November.
“I want to push for the reduction of the term from four years to just two. You see we are not paid to do this job and we receive a lot of bad-mouthing.
Besides we have other commitments like family and business,” he said.
Maximo also said the election may not be held this June but in the coming month since changes need to be installed before he steps down from his post.
“There definitely will be an election. And since we are doing it, we might as well do it right,” Maximo said.
Maximo’s announcement erased all notions that he is delaying the elections because he is holding on to power.
Maximo said before he steps down, he wants to institutionalize the CebuFA, restructuring the membership and establishing within the organization the constitution and by laws that the PFF has encouraged all provincial FAs to follow.
Fifa rules
“We need to rid off our system the individual membership,” Maximo said. He added this will be in line with the Fifa rules, which stipulates that all members should be club-based.
Maximo also said that he wants the clubs from other cities and municipalities in Cebu to have voting powers.
“At the start of my term, football has grown to the different towns and cities of the Cebu province. We will be asking each municipality’s active football leaders to group their clubs and form an FA. These will then become the stakeholders of CebuFA,” he added.
He plans to call for a general meeting of all active members by the end of June when all the organizations have “stabilized for the school-year” to explain to them what needs to be done.
“They will be given ample time to abide by it and then we will call for the general elections,” Maximo added. (MCB)
