The Academic Manifesto

IT'S OFFICIAL. Today marks the beginning of another head-reeling time of your life.

Yup! Its school, school, and school time again. It sucks? I agree.

Pinoy Votes: Sun.Star Election 2007

Sad to say, it’s June once again. Last summer’s fun and freedom are now but distant memories overshadowed by the S words–studying, school–just take your pick. Opening today are gates of colleges and universities eager to receive you with “open arms.”

Yet within these gates, a danger lurks. Here, Marx’s theory of dialectical materialism or simply a class struggle takes form.

Yes, in this world of youthful wiles, a class struggle does persist.

As this new school year starts, let’s re-examine the rigid caste that continually shapes a student’s life within the four corners of the campus.

Go, feast you eyes and enrich your minds with a campus’ social strata to ensure survival in your daily student life.

Einsteins

Schools are learning institutions. And what do you expect from a learning institution? They’re full of scholars, loyal followers to top the exams and bring home the bacon. Ranging from a wide variety of faces, the drive to top any exam ties them together; they are perhaps the most common breed in any learning institution. Determined and focused, they compete fiercely for recognition getting their high from topping mind-boggling exams and finding the Y’s and Z’s of a complicated algebraic formula.

Social Butterflies

Wearing the latest in fashion, accessories and makeup is this breed of students. Image is everything for these girls and boys (sometimes). When they sashay down the covered walk in their smooth and chick get-ups, shining chandeliers earrings and colorful pumps, the hustle and bustle of a crowded school seem to hush down, all eyes on them. Knowing the choreography, these girls bask in the attention. The look in their eyes says it all: I’m so adorable.

Ball Fanatics

They say that developing one’s mind is incomplete if the development of the body is not included. Taking this conviction to heart, these students specialize on handling balls of different colors and sizes. Most common on these roles are soccer dudes who have established their own subculture. They see the university as a huge football field or gym where they could exhaust all their energies on kicking, striking, or dribbling any round object that comes their way. So look out, you’re head might be mistaken for something else.

Stars

Emo, gothic punks, thrashers, hip-hop dudes, bandistas and everything in between. Yes, they are the stars of the university–either by popularity or by self-proclamation, it really doesn’t matter. Walking under a virtual spotlight (because of their "artistry"), they always stand out from the crowd in their choices and style. To them, life is art and art is life. Everything they do is governed by it, no matter how perverse it might look or sound. One can conclude that art is really relative.

Mr./Ms. World

The minority. They are called loners and social outcasts by virtue of choice. Living in their own hassle-free and ideal world; finding comfort in silence and social disconnect. Occasionally, one could rub shoulder with a member of this group. They are characterized primarily by their ability to appear and disappear with ease. Now you see them; now you don’t.
