DGNHS bucks slow start in V-League
By Marian C. Baring
Sun.Star Staff Reporter

THE Don Gerardo National High School (DGNHS) opened its bid for the Cebu title of the Shakey’s Girls Volleyball league on a high note, as it shrugged off a sloppy start to win over University of Cebu, 16-25, 25-10, 25-6, yesterday at the University of Southern Philippines Foundation Gym.

It was supposedly a mismatch between the multi-titled DGNHS and UC, but it took time before the DGNHS spikers of coach Dindo Alilin could get their groove together.

“They had to find their confidence. They seem to have lost it in the first set,” said Alilin.

Only when defeat was looming ahead for DGNHS did it start to make their presence felt, behind first spiker Anna Kristine Capinpin.

“She carried the team to victory but they started slow,” added Alilin, who also helped steer the team to the titles of the Mandaue Amateur Volleyball Association title and the Maambong contest, which was joined by teams from the sixth district.

DGNHS is trying to improve on their third place finish in last year’s Shakey’s tournament.

Forfeit

The other game saw the University of San Carlos sailing to an easy victory after Pit-os National School failed to show up.

Other than Pit-os forfeiting its game, organizers were hounded by the last minute pullout by University of San Jose Recoletos, who withdrew only the day before the tournament began.

“We were in a short panic because USJ-R backed out so we had to do the schedules all over again and just one day before the tournament,” organizer Jordan Paca said.
