City Council commends 5-year-old girl’s heroism

FIVE-YEAR-OLD Chevaune Julve’s bravery and act of heroism earned the Cebu City Council’s praises yesterday.

On mass motion, the Council commended Julve for the bravery she demonstrated when a fire hit her aunt’s house in Doña Cristina Subdivision in Barangay Guadalupe last Thursday.

Without anyone’s help, Julve pulled out her four-year-old brother and three-year-old cousin from the burning house shortly after she arrived from her kindergarten class.

“Chevaune Julve, who just came from her kindergarten class, displayed heroism despite the apparent danger to her life as she went inside the burning house and led her brother and cousin to safety,” Councilor Gerardo Carillo said in his resolution.

“Acts of selfless heroism are rare nowadays, especially when danger is imminent and the individuals involved are children,” he continued.

Vice Mayor Michael Rama, though, was wary about the commendation, saying it might encourage children to risk their lives in times of danger.

While they lauded Julve’s bravery, children should also be reminded to keep out of harm’s way, especially during emergencies and fire incidents.

Mayor Tomas Osmeña already praised the girl’s parents earlier, saying they have trained their daughter properly.

“We extend it to the parents for having a girl like that. It shows that even if she comes from a poor family, (her parents) were able to teach their children, particularly this girl, the values of family loyalty and of responsibility,” the mayor had said. (LCR)
