CEBU Province will be on full alert beginning 6 a.m. today, hours before local officials take their oaths of office at noon.

The alert status will continue until 6 a.m. of Tuesday, after the new officials report for their first day as elected officials.

The Cebu Provincial Police Office (CPPO) will also be paying special attention to San Fernando town, where the incoming mayor won by just 40 votes in the May 14 polls.

Bantayan Island, which was placed under Comelec control, will be monitored although the sub-task group created for the elections is still operational.

A crowd disturbance management team from the Regional Mobile Group (RMG) will be in San Fernando town to secure the oath-taking ceremony of Mayor-elect Lakambini “Neneth” Reluya.

Reluya defeated Renee Canoy, wife of incumbent Mayor Antonio Canoy, who won as vice mayor.

Reluya also earlier asked the CPPO to return the bodyguards assigned to her during the campaign period due to “serious threats.”

Asked if there was tension in the southern town that needed an augmentation team for the oath-taking, acting CPPO Director Carmelo Valmoria said they have not monitored any reports but are preparing “for any eventuality.”

“We always prepare for the worst-case scenario. There could be a situation wherein supporters from other parties might prevent the assumption of officials,” Valmoria told reporters yesterday.

All police chiefs have been directed to make their own security arrangements for the oath-taking ceremonies in their areas.

The CPPO will also be in charge of securing the Provincial Capitol for the oath-taking of Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia, who will have Vice President Noli de Castro as her guest.

As for the scheduled plebiscites in Carcar and Lapu-Lapu City, Valmoria advised licensed gun holders to be aware of the plebiscite period, as a gun ban is in effect in these areas during this time.

The plebiscite period in Carcar began last June 10 and will end on July 4. The plebiscite will be held tomorrow.

In Lapu-Lapu City, the plebiscite period began last June 25 and will end on July 25. The plebiscite will be held on July 21.

This means that even if gun owners have a permit to carry a firearm outside the residence, they can still be held for violation of the gun ban within these areas.

Security arrangements for both plebiscites will be the same as during the recent polls.

A team from the Special Reaction Unit will be in Carcar to secure tomorrow’s plebiscite.
