Tuesday, July 03, 2007 New body won’t affect Cebu dancesport
THE Games and Amuse-ments Board (GAB) announced last week that it is now recognizing another organization as the sanctioning body for dancesport.
According to a national paper last week, GAB is now naming the National Dance Teachers Council (NDTC) as the recommending body for GAB accreditation.
Cebuano dancesport enthusiasts, however, need not worry because it will not affect Cebu’s pride, Dancesport Team Cebu City (DTCC), as an organization and in its future events.
DTCC is in the midst of its preparation for the upcoming international and national events in September, which will be held at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel.
Sanction power
According to reports, the NDTC, which hopes to unify all dancesport organizations in the country, now holds the power to sanction any event that will be organized by any group.
DTCC said through spokesperson April Tudtud-Ramos that the group is spared from this ruling, as NDTC is more concerned of groups for the professional dance athletes.
“We do recognize that the professional group in the country has strengthened, but it will not be appropriate for us to affiliate with them because NDTC is a group for professional dance athletes. DTCC is a group for amateur dance athletes,” Ramos said.
Ramos said that although they have professionals in their midst, these people are more concerned in propagating the sports through teaching and not in competing.
“We have Loloi (Ren-don, head coach), but the priority is teaching and development of new talents,” said Ramos.
DTCC belongs to the umbrella organization of Dancesport Council of the Philippines Inc. (DSCPI), which is the recognized national sports organization of the Philippine Olympic Committee. DSCP is also a member of the International Dancesport Federation.
First
DTCC’s international competition in September, opens a competition for the professionals. This will be the first ever that the country offers a category for professional dance athletes.
Despite this, Ramos said that it is not necessary for them to have the event sanctioned by NDTC.
“Although it is organized by us, that competition is open to everyone, regardless of affiliation,” Ramos said. (MCB)
