Recently, five communal toilets were set up in the barangay to improve the sanitation and to provide livelihood to some of the women in the barangay, which only earns 10 percent from the facility.
“This is a way to give decent livelihood to the residents especially to the women,” said Barangay Captain Jose S. Sable Sr.
“I earn at least P70 a day since I look after one of the public comfort rooms. P2 is the fee per use,” said Pilar.
Pilar is an active member of the Gender and Development (GAD), which also helped in the fourth barangay clean-up drive. The clean up was a joint mission of 16 coastal barangays recently. The activity was headed by the Cebu Coastline Management Board (CMB) headed by Vice Mayor Michael Rama.
Rama urged those who participated in the clean-up to “work only by heart.” “Do not work only when people are looking,” he added.
Volunteerism
However, Councilor Edwin Jagmoc Sr., a member of the committee on barangay affairs said, “Self-reliance and volunteerism should be instilled in the society as a whole.”
Engr. Dionisio Gualiza, chairman of the core group of CMB, asked the student volunteers from the Cebu City Don Carlos A. Gothong Memorial National High School to help in the clean-up.
Trainees from the police Regional Training School, senior citizens, members of the Sangguniang Kabataan, barangay officials, day care workers, tanods were also among the volunteers.
Rose Judith Refullido, a 4th year student, said, “I’m willing to clean. I am not forced since I also live here. In fact, I am not disgusted. If the surrounding is tidy, we are happy, no sickness and other effects would be a good attitude.” (Nesreen C. Abdulrauf, UP Mass Comm student)
