Roach sees Czar victory in Vegas

ACCLAIMED boxing trainer Freddie Roach has no doubts in the abilities of Boholano WBO Asia Pacific lightweight champion Czar Amonsot.

In fact, the two-time Trainer of the Year awardee is confident the Filipino warrior will win the contest against the hard-hitting Australian and undefeated WBO lightweight interim champion Michael Katsidis on July 21 in Las Vegas.

But Cebu’s boxing godfather Antonio Lopez Aldeguer thinks Amonsot’s chances of winning the interim title will depend on his conditioning and training.

“Freddie believes that Czar will win the fight. However, he said that Amonsot’s chance to win the fight is by decision, while if Katsidis’ wins, it will be by knockout,” Aldeguer said yesterday.

Amonsot has been in the US since the third week of June and has trained rigorously under the close watch of Roach and Cebuano trainer Edito Villamor.

Last Tueday, Roach was very impressed on Amonsot’s performance during a sparring session against an undefeated fighter from Ghana.

“It was a very good sparring session for Czar against a fighter from Ghana, who is undefeated in 18 fights with 17 wins by knockouts. It goes to show that he is ready against the hard-punching Katsidis. The boy is very focused and I believe he will go down fighting,” Aldeguer said.

Amonsot, who has been training hard for his supposed title defense this July 7, is peaking the way his handlers want and on fight night, they expect the Boholano warrior to be the aggressive fighter from the outset.

Katsidis holds an immaculate 22-0 win-loss record with 20 KOs, while Amonsot carries an 18-2-1 mark with 10 KOs. (RCM)
