Gang war victim’s kin to get aid

HEARING about the plight of the family of a shooting victim, Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña assured them of the City Government’s assistance.

Osmeña said he will help facilitate the free transport of the victim’s remains to their home in Tacloban City, and perhaps some boat tickets for the family members.

Stray bullets hit Jake Gallano Chan, 33, last Thursday dawn when gang members shot two teenagers they mistook to be members of their rival group outside Mango Square mall on Gen. Maxilom Ave., Cebu City.

Chan, a law graduate preparing to take this year’s Bar exams, died of gunshot wounds in the shoulder and chest before he reached the hospital.

“I will check with (Department of Social Welfare and Services Head) Kathy Yso, but we will help. We can get passes from shipping lines and they’re always willing to help,” the mayor told a news conference yesterday.

Lourdes Chan, the victim’s mother, appealed for assistance so she could bring her son’s remains to Tacloban.

Yso is in Palawan for a convention but in a phone interview, she said she already relayed instructions to her staff.

Yso said the free boat tickets are possible, and she will also check if the City can also provide food and burial assistance. (LCR)
