Saturday, July 07, 2007 Weigh-ins weed out some to knockout night
KOREAN WBO Asia-Pacific Jr. welterweight champion Young Sung Kim was stripped of his title after failing to make the weight during the official weigh-in yesterday for the KO Artist 2: WBO Asia Pacific Championships held at the Tin Gow Private Function room at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel.
Tonight, Thai challenger Kongtoranee Por Surasak, the late replacement of the injured Somchai Nakbalee, will try to go all out to capture the belt for his country in this card promoted by Lee Dong-Gyu of BP Entertainment and Sammy Gello-ani of the SGG Sports Promotion at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel Grand Ballroom.
Young tipped the scales at 144 lbs., four pounds over but still failed to make the limit after he was given two hours to reduce to the required 140-pound limit. Kongtoranee, though, made the 140 lbs. on his first try.
Weight problem
Filipino WBO Asia Pacific minimum-weight champion Nietes also exceeded weight, but the Murcia, Negros Occidental native ALA only had to shed an extra pound, which he successfully cleared after 30 minutes. Nietes’ challenger Saengpetch Sor Sakulpan of Thailand tipped at exactly 105 lbs.
An interesting women’s professional boxing bout is also scheduled tonight between the appealing Kim Bo Young of Korea against Cebuana fighter Judith Subingsubing.
Kim, 22, who had won her previous fights in Korea is going to test Subingsubing, 23, who will debut in the pro after nearly six years of trying in the amateur.
The much awaited clash between two talented and hard punching Cebuanos, ALA Boy Rocky Fuentes and RWS Stable’s Benedict Suico for the vacant RP 112 lbs. title, is expected to give justice to the billings as both former amateur boxing standouts trade fists in a scheduled 12-round match.
Fate
However, many boxing pundits believe that the fight would not stretch the full length as they anticipate a knockout.
“This is the start of our long partnership with SGG Promotions and ALA Gym and I look forward to working with them in the future,” said Lee during the press conference before the weigh in.
Gello-ani, for his part, is very much appreciative for the coming of BP Entertainment and Boxing Plaza of Park Yong Min because their efforts will only bring good for Cebu boxing.
Other featured fights in the event include the debut of James Bacon vs. Danilo Logramonte, Joseph Von Miñoza against Tata Galendez.
Other fights will be between Korean sensation Jong Wa Lee and Jimboy Jacinto, Jae Seong Lee and Indonesian Tony Arema, and Moon Byung Joo and Noli Fabroa. (RCM)
