Friday, July 13, 2007 Pinoy pugs plunge into action
SLICK punching ALA Boy Along Denoy will be challenging for the second time WBO Asia Pacific light-flyweight champion Kaichon Sor Vorapin today in Bangkok, Thailand.
Also scheduled to fight today in Thailand is Filipino Eduardo Apa-ap of Davao City, while Nonoy Gonzales has his own battle to fight in Australia.
Apa-ap, who is under the management of SGG Promotions, will face two-time world title challenger Sod Looknongyangtoy for the WBO Asia Pacific super-bantamweight title.
Gonzales, on the other hand, will be putting his Pan-Asian Boxing Association (Paba) middleweight belt on the line, while gunning for the vacant WBO Asia Pacific middleweight title, when he faces the undefeated Jamie Pittman at the Crowne Plaza, Terrigal in New South Wales.
The Candijay-native Denoy, who holds a 14-6-1 win-loss-draw record with 7 wins knockouts, will have the chance to get back at Kaichon, (35-10, 12 KOs) in their first rematch following the controversial technical decision loss during their last encounter in July 2005.
Aside from avenging his own loss, Denoy also has another agenda in mind--to avenge the loss of his stablemate Rocky Fuentes, whom Kaichon defeated twice for the same title.
Good chance
“I believe Denoy has a good chance of winning this time. He dominated the fight the first time and only lost by technical decision. He is a stronger and a better fighter this time,” Sammy Gello-ani told Sun.Star Cebu yesterday.
Fuentes lost to Kaichon when they fought for the vacant belt in October 2004. Kaichon then made a successful defense over Denoy. Kaichon vacated the belt to challenge WBO champion Hugo Fidel Cazares in October 2005 but lost.
The Thai regained the title with a unanimous win over Fuentes in January last year and last defended the title over Korean Goo Yuh Myung last March.
Looknongyantoy (30-2, 11 KOs) will make his first title defense against Apa-ap (6-3, 1 KO). Looknongyantoy won the title over Jun Talape by unanimous decision in November last year.
Meanwhile, in Australia, Gonzales (22-19-2, 12 KOs) will be facing a tough challenge in 6-foot-1, 25-year-old Pittman, who is unbeaten in 13 fights, winning seven by knockouts.
Gonzales won the 154-pound belt last April over Aussie Gavin Topp in Queensland.
Fighting in the undercard is Filipino Jun-Jun Geraldino against Leonardo Zapparigna for a six rounder. (RCM)
