Hotel, university ink pact to improve HRM course

A HOTEL-RESORT signed an agreement with a university to provide training facilities and teachers to hotel and restaurant management and tourism students.

Hilton Cebu Resort and Spa and the University of San Carlos (USC) sealed their partnership last Thursday to “develop curricula, faculty and students of hotel and restaurant management (HRM), and tourism,” a press statement of the hotel said.

“If you want to produce globally competitive students, this is one easy way of doing it,” said USC president Fr. Roderick Salazar Jr., SVD.

Aside from “providing opportunities” to students and teachers of USC to obtain industry experience and training, the statement from Hilton Cebu said that it will give graduates a chance to be employed in the hotel.

The agreement also provides that Hilton Cebu will assist USC in updating the academic institution’s curriculum as well as allow a team of hotel personnel to share knowledge with teachers and students.

Strategy

Salazar said the agreement is one of USC’s strategy to continuously improve the quality of education it provides.

He said that one of USC’s “challenge” is to “life the standard of education” in country. He cited the “decreasing” knowledge of English among students in the country.

USC also offers courses on other languages such as Mandarin, Niponggo, French and Spanish.

Despite the present quality of education in the countr, Hilton Cebu general manager Peter Pedersen said he believes in the capabilities of USC students.

“It is very important to tie up with a five-star university. (It’s just the) perfect formula,” he said. (TEP)
