Monday, July 16, 2007 Lean DTCC team snags five golds
FROM being the most bemedalled team in the quarterly rankings, Dancesport Team Cebu City (DTCC) became a tailender in last Saturday’s Mid Year Ranking and Competition of the Dancesport Council of the Philippines Inc (DSCPI) at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.
But DTCC didn’t mind as the team, which believes that sportsmanship is synonymous to gaining friends, still made its presence felt.
DTCC sent only nine pairs of dance athletes from its usual 50-couple delegation. And the nine couples did not fail to showcase DTCC’s winning spirit as it still managed to haul in five gold, one silver and two bronze medals.
“Despite sending a token and lean representation, TCC still managed to win that much medals,” said DTCC founder Ed Hayco, who was recently elected to the board of directors of the DSCPI.
Spearheading the medal haul for the Cebuanos are Danilo Gagani and Princess Inocando, who won a gold medal in the special event 1 standard contest and a bronze in Grade C standard.
Anselmo Estillore and Mae Lozada also finished on top in the special event 1 Latin dances. Bjorn Torreon and Lennibelle Padillo topped the Grade E Latin, Danilo Alamrio and Kinue Sakurai won the gold in the Grade D standard, while Dondon Mertas and Samantha Ho won the team’s last gold after dominating the Grade D Latin.
Rolan Pacana and Ma. Socorro Moynihan won the team’s lone silver.
“After an extensive major gold medal haul last year, the team decided to lay low in medal competitions this year to focus their finances and energies in the team’s projects,” Hayco said.
DTCC currently has its hands full with the preparations for the 2nd Cebu International Dancesport Competition and the free dancesport workshop held almost every week for the entire year.
“Our organization believes that the essence of true sportsmanship is gaining friends and helping people. With this competition, we are able to build an international network of friends through dancesport,” Hayco said.
The international competition is slated to open on Sept. 22 at the grand ballroom of the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel.
The competition will see the top dancers of US, Russia, United Kingdon, China, Hong Kong, Germany, Japan, Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia. DTCC expects some 500 pairs to compete. (MCB)
