AN ex-convict was gunned down along Arlington Pond Ext., Barangay Sambag II, Cebu City yesterday afternoon.
Donald “Dondon” Caballes, 31, a resident in the barangay, took at least six gunshot wounds – one in the head and five in his body. He died on the spot.
A 14-year-old boy, who was with Caballes, also suffered a wound from a slug that grazed his right ear.
SPO1 Jay Yballe, chief investigator of the Homicide Section, told Sun.Star Cebu that two motorcycle-riding men, one of them armed with a 9mm pistol, attacked Caballes past 3 p.m.
The 14-year-old boy and Caballes’ other companion told Yballe’s team that the victim was in the area to sell a fighting cock.
Gutter
While Caballes and his two companions were sitting on a gutter in an alley some 100 meters away from the main road, a motorcycle boarded by the perpetrators arrived in the area.
The passenger got off from the motorcycle and pumped eight bullets into Caballes’ body and head. The perpetrators then fled toward Osmeña Blvd.
Personnel from the Scene of the Crime Operations (Soco) recovered eight empty shells and two slugs from 9mm pistol.
Yballe said personal grudge could be a motive behind the killing.
He added that Caballes’ live-in-partner Elena Gabuya told him that Caballes figured in a fight with a neighbor more than a month ago. The fight even reached the attention of the barangay’s Lupon Tagapamayapa.
They are not also ruling out the possibility that the killing was carried out by vigilantes.
Meanwhile, a 17-year-old boy accused a rookie policeman of mauling him in Barangay Suba, Cebu City last Sunday night.
Argument
Eric (real name withheld for being a minor), escorted by his aunt, went to the Internal Affairs Service (IAS) at the Cebu City Police Office yesterday to file a complaint for physical injuries in relation to the Child Welfare Act against his neighbor PO1 Gilbert Igot.
Eric identified Igot, a field training policeman detailed at the Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Bureau (CIIB), as the perpetrator.
Eric said the incident occurred while he and his male friend, the 17-year-old son of Barangay Captain Joel Sable, were arguing about their bets on who would win in a basketball championship game last Sunday.
The noise created by the two allegedly irked Igot, who approached Eric and asked him if he knew how to execute push ups.
Kicked, punched
When Eric said no, Igot, who was allegedly drunk, allegedly punched him in the chest. And although already fallen, Eric still got kicked several times.
Igot could not be reached for comment yesterday. Several calls were made to his two cellular phones to no avail.
Investigation
CIIB Chief George Ylanan, in an interview with reporters, said he will help the IAS in the investigation, particularly in ensuring that Igot shows up during the investigation.
Ylanan said Igot’s status may be affected considering that he is still under the field training program (FTP) of the Police Regional Office 7.
The FTP is a requirement for a rookie policeman to become a regular member of the police organization.
Eric first approached radio dyHP for assistance on where to go to file his complaint against Igot. (JST)
