Cebu holds the record in terms of participation beating those from the 23 other cities all across the country.

“It was okay. We are content on the number that we gathered last year. We want to just maintain that number of participants,” Cebu organizer Ricky Ballesteros said, downplaying last year’s record field of 25,500 runners who flooded the streets of Cebu last year.

Those who want to register may contact the Cebu City Sports Center office at 254-8567.

The divisions will be the 3 kilometer kiddie run, 5K Fun Run, 21K runs. There will be two age groups for the kiddies division, which is the six to nine years old and between 10 to 12 years old.

School contest

The registration fees are minimal but registrants need to bring a 300 gram pack of Milo. The registration fee for the 21K racers will be P100, while those racing in the 5K and Kiddie runs will pay P40 and P30 respectively.

Registration ends on Aug. 10. It will be a first come, first served basis.

The top three schools on the other hand, with the most number of runners finishing the 5K and 3K runs will win the biggest school delegation award. To be able to qualify for this award, a school must at least have 50 racers.

There will also be the inter school running team competition, for schools with at least 25 entries running in the 5K event and the cheer dance competition.

Cash prizes will be at stake for the top five finishers in the different divisions.

The top three winners in the 21K will get P10,000, P6,000 and P4,000, respectively with the fourth and fifth placers pocketing P1,000 and P500, respectively.

The top three male and female finishers in both men and women’s divisions will qualify for the national finals on November, where they will be competing in the full marathon.

Apart from the P200,000 total cash prizes for the top 10 finishers in the national finals in Manila, a bonus prize of P25,000 is dangled for the first runner to break the 2:20 invisible time barrier. An additional P10,000 is up for grabs for the first male runner to break the 2:21.33 record of Cresenciano Sabal and the same amount for the female runner to break Jho-an Banayag’s time of 2:48.16.

The other regional eliminations are Bohol, Tacloban, Dumaguete, Roxas City, Iloilo, Naga, Legazpi, San Pablo, Cagayan de Oro, Baguio, while the national final will be on Nov. 18. (MCB)
