Town truck crushes woman, 68, to death

A TOWN’S 10-wheeler truck crashed into two vehicles, killing one woman and injuring four persons yesterday morning.

The 10-wheeler truck owned by the Municipality of Consolacion crashed into a tricycle and a multicab that were in front of it.

Fidela Gimao, 68, died on the spot after the truck rammed the motorcycle that she was about to board.

She had just visited her grandchildren and was on her way home.

At 9 a.m., Gimao hailed a tricycle that had passed in Barangay Pulpogan I, Consolacion.

Following the tricycle was a multicab van driven by Reymar Coligado, 27.

Since the road was narrow, Coligado did not overtake the tricycle and waited until Gimao was settled.

However, he did not expect the 10-wheeler truck to suddenly ram him from behind.

The impact caused the multicab to lurch forward, hitting the tricycle in front of it.

The tricycle spun around, throwing Gimao several meters away.

The crash did not stop the 10-wheeler as it continued to run and crush Gimao’s body under its tires.

Also wounded were the tricycle driver and his three passengers.

SPO1 Romulo Sasing of the Consolacion Police Station said they were unable to get the names of the others onboard the tricycle because they were rushed to the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center.

The truck, driven by Henry Alin, 31, had just come from a quarry site in Barangay Garing.

Alin told police that he already noticed that the brakes were defective, which was why instead of hauling “anapog”
(limestone) from the quarry site, he decided to take the truck for repairs.

All three vehicles were headed toward Cebu City.

Alin is now under police custody.

Last Friday, an army truck’s brakes failed as it was traveling downhill.

Six persons were wounded. (MEA)
