GREGORY Domingo, director of the boards of SM Investments Corp. and Manila Electric Co. (Meralco), will be among the speakers of the 4th Sun.Star Economic Forum (SEF) slated for Aug. 23 at Marco Polo Plaza Cebu.

This year’s theme is “Cebu Tourism: Moving Forward,” reflecting the forum’s focus on the tourism industry, a key driver of the Cebu economy.

In his talk, “An entrepreneur’s view on private sector investments in tourism,” Domingo will discuss the contribution of Cebu in the SM Group’s business, the conglomerate’s plans for tourism investment in Cebu, as well as the tourism potential of Cebu.

Other speakers

Aside from Domingo, the 4th SEF will also feature Tourism Secretary Joseph “Ace” Durano and National Economic and Development Authority 7 Director Marlene Rodriguez.

In the afternoon, discussion groups with industry players will tackle topics relating to attracting tourism investment in Cebu and making the environment friendly to tourists, with the view to coming up with advocacies that the SEF can champion.

Businessmen will benefit greatly from Domingo’s wealth of experience in trade and investments in both the private sector and government.

He was an undersecretary of the Department of Trade and Industry and vice-chairman and managing head of the Board of Investments from May 2001 to April 2004.

Before 2001, Domingo spent most of his career in financial services in the United States starting with Mellon Bank in 1982 and ending up as managing director for Chase Manhattan Bank in New York before returning to the Philippines in the mid-‘90s.

He trained in management engineering at the Ateneo de Manila University, and subsequently clinched a master’s degree in operations research from the Wharton School and an MBA from the Asian Institute of Management.

Domingo also currently serves as director on the boards of BDO Private Bank and Pampanga Sugar Development Co. (PR)
