City Council orders deadline to sort out ‘spaghetti wires’

IF utility companies will heed the Cebu City Council, dangling black “spaghetti” wires will be a thing of the past by December 2008.

The council officials have directed telecommunications and television cable companies to implement a color-coding system for the bundling of wires “for a better and cleaner Cebu.”

For them, the “hanging spaghetti wires” are an eyesore and a safety hazard.

To promote public safety, the technical infrastructure committee has directed utility firms to bundle all wires by Dec. 30 next year.

The Philippine Long Distance and Telephone Co. (PLDT) was asked to take the lead.

“Pedestrians and motorists have long been suffering from the risks and inconvenience of unsightly dangling spaghetti wires of telecom companies, exposing them to hazards and impeding fire trucks… where the hanging wires block the way,” the committee’s resolution read.

In its regular session last Wednesday, the council urged utility companies to act on the request as part of the firms’ corporate social responsibility.

Specifically, the council told Eastern Telecom, PT&T, Digitel, Innove, Skycable, BayanTel and PLDT to bundle wires that are all over the city.

The Philippine National Police, Armed Forces of the Philippines and the National Telecommunications Commission were asked to do the same.

City Councilor Nestor Archival said that the Visayan Electric Co. has already started bundling wires, which contributed to the beautification program in preparation for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations summit last January.

“But to date, there are still utility wires that are not bundled and cause some hazards to pedestrians and motorists,” the councilor lamented. (LCR)
