Conquer-Tuko finds way home first

TEAM Conquer-Tuko made good use of their maps and compass to take the overall plum of the Third World Outdoors Orienteering Cup, which wrapped up yesterday in Mountain View Park in Baranagay Busay.

The team, composed of Rodolfo Verdida Jr., Rico Valentin and Madelyn Carter, smooth-sailed their way through the eight control points back to the finish line in one hour and 25.30 minutes.

Carter was part of the team that finished only third in the Cebu Mountaineering Alliance (CMA) adventure race in Dalaguete last month.

Meanwhile, Team CMA-Gusla of John Frederick Baynas, Jake Lianta and Mia Morre took the second place after completing the navigating contest in 1:32.

Maritess Bael, the lady member of Team Tamlas, who won the women’s individual title last Saturday, led her team to a decent third place finish.

Bael, who is joined by John Rey Paglinawan and Ian Gurrea, settled for third after coming up with a total time of 1:47.15. The team also finished third in the Manunggal Adventure Race held in Mt. Manunggal in Balamban last March.

Salvaging a fourth place finish is the team of sport climbers Wendell Getubig, Juan Duazo and Angel Pasculado. The three checked in with a time of 2 hours and four minutes.

The race, which is organized by Cebu Mountaineering Society (CMS), is aimed at promoting the sport that has gained popularity only lately.

CMS seemed successful at this endeavor as they attracted more participants this year.

“We had more teams now. Last year, we only had 12, this year, there are 17 teams. Even in the individual races, we had more participants,” said secretariat head Ann Vidal.

The other day, the individual races and team relay were held. Aldin Artega won the men’s title, while the team relay winner was team Argao.

This race is the second rendition following last year’s debut.

The race is supported by Island Souvenirs, Power Plus Drinks, Omega Pain Killer, Lecit E, H2Zero Distilled drinking water, V12 Radgear, Nature Spring, Gatorade, Atan Guardo, Dr. Abraham Manlawe, Mulatto Outdoor and AS-ES sports wear. (MCB0
