Monday, July 30, 2007 Mendel nails grandslam in USC Run
TWO marathons ago, the University of Southern Philippines Foundation became a regular fixture, thanks to its marathon racers led by top bet Mendel Lopez.
Yesterday, Lopez continued his scorching run as he scored a grand slam following his win in the University of San Carlos Power Run at the Capitol grounds. The event saw USPF pulling off a 1-2 finish in the premier 10-kilometer men’s open division.
Lopez maintained a steady momentum and completed the race in his usual 33-minute mark. Team mate Joel Delposo came in second after a minute with a time of 34.19.
Earlier this month, Lopez and Delposo together with another team mate, dominated the Adidas Marathon and the DYAB Run last month.
Top five
Finishing at third place is Adonis Singson, while John Philip Dueñas and Retrenel Banzon, rounded up the top five.
Liezel Gitaruelas topped the distaff side with a time of 41 minutes and 39 seconds. Mary Jane Beboso came in at second place with a clocking of 42.25, while Mary Rose Arman salvaged third place with a time of 44.34. Korean Kwai-Ying Wong was fourth to cross the finish line followed by Ivy Biagan.
USC division
The 10km class for USC students was dominated by Joshua Dominci Cuering, followed by Nathan Jatulan and Livre Nacierda.
The women’s side saw Alma Albano and swimmer Lorhiz Echavez taking the winners’ podium.
The 10k Open executive division was by won Gary Garcia. Jeffrey Cabagnot and Ruth Banzon took the runners up diadems.
In the 5 K run, Marissa Beboso crossed the finish line ahead of Pearl Beronia and Javellana Christine, who settled second and third, respectively. The top three racers in the 5K USC division were Anna Beatrice Quijano, Mizpah Balmoria and Leslie Quijano. (MCB)
