Capitol kicks off Founding Day fete
THE Capitol yesterday opened its weeklong activities in celebration of the 438th Founding Anniversary of the Cebu Province on Monday, Aug. 6.
Monday will also be a non-working holiday for the whole Province including the cities of Cebu, Mandaue and Talisay and the component cities of Lapulapu, Danao and Toledo.
Portraits
The activity opened with a flag raising ceremony and then followed by the unveiling of the portrait of two past governors, Sotero Cabahug and Buenaventura Rodriguez, who were instrumental in the construction of the Provincial Capitol.
Cabahug was governor in 1937 when the construction of the edifice started while Rodriguez assumed office in 1938, during which the Capitol building was completed.
After the unveiling was the launching of the Photo Contest of Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia dubbed “Catch Her If You Can.”
The contest is open to amateur and professional photographers who have photos of the governor as she does her daily routine.
Then, Garcia also opened the Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia Unity Cup, which is already on its third year.
Holiday
Also because of the founding anniversary on the Province on Monday, there will be no classes and work in the entire Cebu Province and its component cities and highly urbanized cities including Cebu City.
Last July 26, 1999, through the enactment of Republic Act (RA) 8952, Aug. 6 of every year was declared special non-working holiday.
RA 8952 amended Republic Act 7698, the original Charter of the Cebu Province and with the amendment, the holiday now expressly covers the cities of Cebu, Mandaue and Talisay and the component cities of Lapulapu, Danao and Toledo. (MBG)
