City sets to release P4.6M aid to victims

THE Mandaue City Government is set to release about P4.6 million from its calamity fund as assistance to victims of the fire that hit Barangay Tipolo last week.

The City Council, however, could authorize yet the release of the money as the City Social Welfare Office needs to verify whether all claimants are indeed fire victims.

The council has since declared the barangay a calamity area.

Social welfare officer Violeta Cavada said they have listed 747 families, 476 house owners and 271 renters and sharers. The City, however, expects the number to go down.

The City has promised an P8,000 aid for house owners and P3,000 for renters.

Final tally

The final tally of the number of victims will be forwarded to the City Disaster Coordinating Council (CDCC), which will endorse its recommendation to the City Council for approval.

Aside from the City’s aid, Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia and Mayors Tomas Osmeña of Cebu City and Arturo Radaza of Lapu-Lapu City have extended various forms of assistance to the victims of the fire that hit Jaime Compound in Barangay Tipolo last July 25.

More aid

“We are not talking here of the amount, it’s the thought that counts,” said Mandaue City Mayor Jonas Cortes of the help the City has been getting from its neighbors.

Aside from local government units (LGUs), the private sector and the business community have extended assistance, which the City will acknowledge by issuing receipts.

These are 3,000 are ready-to-eat meals good for two days; a 10-footer van of noodles and rice; food and personnel who assisted in the feeding, processing of victims’ backgrounds, and kitchen and cooking equipment. (OCP)
