Tuesday, July 31, 2007 Calderon ousts past winners
TEN year olds are not known to take things seriously. Except for Emmannuel Jette Calderon III.
Calderon wants to become Asia’s number one kart driver in his division and he takes this challenge with so much passion that he won with relative ease his division in the Kartzone-Pepsi-Y101 Super Karting Series 2007 last Sunday at the Kartzone in Mabolo.
The young daredevil of Paref-Springdale zoomed past his counterparts in the Mini ROK Division. He outclassed Tonyo Carcel and his sister Kali, who was last leg’s winner. The two had to settle for the runners up diadems.
Christian Peeters and JT Gullas salvaged the fourth and fifth spots in this division.
Calderon, who registered the fastest lap time of 28 seconds in this division, considers the Kartzone race as his training ground for the third leg of the Asian Karting Open Championships (Akoc) later this month, which will be held in Indonesia.
Third
“He is preparing hard for the Akoc race,” said Janette Calderon.
In the Akoc, Jette is currently ranked third in the drivers’ overall standing and it is his goal to make it to the number one spot, when the race takes place Aug. 24.
In the last leg of the Akoc, Jette posted the fastest lap time of 28.4 seconds, which he made in the qualifying time trial.
Back to last Sunday’s race, Jess Garcia, banked on another racer’s misfortune to win the Expert 125 Seniors race.
Garcia overtook Stefano Marcelo to take the top plum. Blake Go salvaged third place in this division.
Marcelo, of Marcelo Racing Group, actually zoomed to a good start and was leading in the first two heats. He, however, suffered engine trouble in the third heat, causing his kart to run slow. Garcia then took advantage of the situation to win.
Meanwhile, Sportwriters Association of Cebu awardee, Paco Rodriguez, hit two birds with one stone in his exploit last Sunday.
He not only cemented his spot in the Junior 125 where he won over Brian Mercado and Patrick Gandiongco, he also registered the fastest lap time among all the other racers.
Rodriguez posted 26.86 lap time. Marcelo came at his heels with 26.93, while Gandiongco had 26.97.
In the Heavy 125 class, Dondie Benoya, the first leg winner, bounced back from an upsetting second leg performance to snatch the win back. In the second leg, Benoya suffered engine trouble for him to lose in that race.
