Wednesday, August 01, 2007 Group focuses on eye banking
THE 58th Lions State Convention held in Cebu City recently centered on the newly established Lions Medical Eye Bank-Cebu Facility.
The project is by the Lions of the Philippines, comprising seven districts.
The State Council of Governors and the host clubs invited Lion David Korroch, MJF, executive director of Lions Eye Bank and Research Center of Eastern Virginia, USA, to deliver an inspirational message and to conduct a seminar on eye banking and corneal transplant.
The increasing number of corneal transplants brought about the need for a storage facility for the donated corneas.
The eye bank “harvests” corneas from healthy donors within 15 hours after their deaths.
Preserve
The eye bank can preserve the harvested corneas for 15 days.
It the mission of the facility to reduce the waiting period and provide the much needed cornea tissues for patients and subsidize the cost of corneas for indigent patients.
The eye bank will supply healthy corneas to anyone in the country through air shipment.
