Gorres still has a shot

THERE is still hope that Z “The Dream” Gorres will see action in the much-awaited World Cup Boxing featuring Mexico and
Philippine fighters on Aug. 11 at the Arco Arena in Sacramento, California in the US.

The new hope came after American eye specialist Dr. Steven Steinschriber performed a laser surgery to correct the tear on Gorres eye. The tear, discovered during a routine checkup, jeopardized Gorres’ chances to fight Gerson Guerrero in an IBF super flyweight title eliminator in the World Cup.

Though Gorres was never officially removed from the lineup, the Tear forced Team Philippines to look for a possible replacement for Gorres in the boxing extravaganza.

However, with Dr. Steinschriber’s recent news, which was posted at philboxing.com, the supporters of the Team Philippines can heave a huge sigh of relief.

The final judgment will be known on Aug. 6, when Steinschriber will do another checkup on Gorres.

The report said laser surgeries normally heal in just 16 days but in the case of Gorres, who is athletic, the healing period might less.

Still, aside from the checkup, Gorres seeing action in the world cup will still depend on Golden Boy Promotions vice president Eric Gomez and international matchmaker Samson Lewkowicz since the World Cup is a Golden Boy event in conjunction with the ALA Gym.

Gorres has also not lost his hopes even after finding out that he could be scratched from the original lineup because of his clearance to fight was being withheld due to his retinal problem. Gorres continues to train and works hard at the Wildcard Gym together with the other members of Team Philippines.

Bloated

His reported replacement, Diosdadi Gabi can also relax after he was reportedly bloated at 122 pounds. With less than two weeks to go, it would be tough for Gabi to reduce to the 115-pound super flyweight limit.

The Philippines chances to win the $500,000 worth of world cup, crafted by Icelink will dampen if Gorres, who is considered as among the “sure winners,” will be taken out and will be replaced by an unprepared fighter.

Aside from Gorres, those who will definitely see action in the World Cup are Boholano youngster Rey Bautista, the veteran Gerry Peñalosa, AJ Banal, Michael Domingo and Bert Batawang. (RCM)
