Speak out: Carreta cemetery
By Buddy Lopez Melencion
Carreta, Cebu City

IS this a scam?

I think the authority or caretaker of the Catholic cemetery in Carreta, Cebu City disposes of graveyard lots or sells these to people without proper authority or permission from the Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral.

Or are they conniving with Church officials?

I am asking this question because in the cemetery, some portion of the graveyard lots have been sold even if these are within the road right of way, thereby causing inconvenience to the adjoining graves.

This happened to my family when we buried my wife. We found it hard outside the mausoleum to position the coffin and bring
it inside.

I never thought that the situation in this cemetery would be like in some squatter areas in the city where people have to walk in single line following their footpaths.

That is why during fires, damage is great because of the “choke points.”

This is unlike the Calamba Cemetery where everything is properly arranged and the surrounding has been beautified.

I pray and hope that the cemetery authorities or the Parish Pastoral Council of the Cathedral Church will correct this anomalous practice.
