Citom enforcer nabs thief who victimized Korean

A KOREAN national was victimized by a snatcher while she was standing along Plaridel St. in Barangay Sto. Niño, Cebu City.

The suspected snatcher, however, was not lucky as he was arrested by a traffic enforcer who saw what he did.

Kim Ji Eun was standing outside Luym Building, where she is temporarily staying, when Ricky P. Gargolis, 23, casually approached and snatched her 18-carat gold necklace with a crucifix pendant worth P17,500.

Eun, who was with fellow Korean Han Shin Hye, tried to get her necklace back but Gargolis, who was armed with a seven-inch long knife, quickly ran away.

Traffic enforcer Julito Q. Baldago chased Gargolis and collared him in Juan Luna St.

Gargolis, of Jimalalud, Oriental Negros, was turned over to the Waterfront Police Station, whose personnel last Thursday arrested a man who tried to dupe two persons.

Wilfredo B. Betonia, 34, of Lopez Jaena, Barangay Parian, was handcuffed at 10:30 a.m. along Zulueta St. in Barangay Tinago.

He “pretended” to be a National Statistics Office (NSO) 7 employee who was supposedly tasked to receive applications for authenticated birth certificate copies.

The police acted on the complaint of Reynaldo O. Pulona, 50, and Ma. Estella B. Ocio, 32, both of Ouano St., Barangay Looc, Mandaue City.

Employee

The two told Waterfront policemen that Betonia, who was standing outside the NSO 7’s former office along M. J. Cuenco Ave., introduced himself as an employee.

He would reportedly take their applications to the new office in Sudlon, Lahug, Cebu City.

The ruse would have worked if not for a security guard who approached and told Pulona and Ocio the truth.

Betonia ran way, but was arrested during a follow-up operation by the police.

He was charged with usurpation of official functions penalized under Article 177 of the Revised Penal Code. (JST)
