Cebu SBP head to stage Open tilt in Bogo
AFTER finally getting his appointment as the provincial head of the BAP-SBP, businessman-sportsman Lorenzo “Chao” Sy will organize an invitational basketball tournament early in September in Bogo City.
The project, which will be his first as the appointed basketball chief in Cebu province, is going to stake out total of P200,000 in cash prizes.
“I have been planning to hold this magnitude of event to help liven up basketball in Cebu, but with the appointment coming along the way, I guess it gives additional prestige to this tournament,” Sy told Sun.Star Cebu yesterday.
Prizes
The Bogo City Open Invitational Basketball tournament will give P75,000 to the champion, P50,000 to the first runnerup, P30,000 to the second runnerup and P20,000 to the third runnerup.
“All of this money will come from my own pocket and I am not soliciting for any help from anybody. But if there are someone who is interested to help me with this project, they are very welcome,” added Sy.
For the moment, multi-titled M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala and Holcim Pryce Pharma-Misamis Oriental have confirmed participation to this weeklong event.
New league
Sy is also hoping to invite Arthro-Tribu Guardo and the Cebu Landmasters to join the competition.
Aside from this, Sy is now on the planning stage of the holding an inter-city tournament, which he hopes will polish the talents of the young and aspiring basketball players.
The target participants in the competition are Cebu City, Mandaue, Lapu-Lapu, Danao, Toledo, Talisay, Carcar, Naga and Bogo.
Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Chairman William “Butch” Ramirez is offering his assistance on Sy.
“Whenever you need help to uplift the skills of the referees, coaches or if you need help on sports medicine and others please let me know because I can help you,” Ramirez told Sy.
Sy hosted Ramirez’s press conference with the local sports scribes yesterday at the Hotel Fortuna in Borromeo St. (RCM)
