Mayol fight diary: News coffee
CHICAGO - With my son AJ in tow, I went to the Chicago Hilton at 10:25 a.m. I had hoped to talked to Rodel Mayol and Mercito Gesta hours before their big bouts, observe how they are doing emotionally and physically.
But both pugs were resting when I got to Room 1060. Common sense dictated against further intrusion. Somewhere in the 13th floor, Bernabe Concepcion was also napping.
Instead of heading home outright, I took AJ to the Pavilion. It was $19.50 for each of us, but I figured there are things money can’t buy. Such as having breakfast with your son at the lobby of a four-star hotel.
As usual, I ate like it was my last meal. I had two slices of ham, three slices of French toast, a corn muffin, small plateful of fruits and orange juice. I also had a steaming hot omelet, whipped by a chef in the middle of the buffet rack.
AJ only had pancakes and plain scrambled eggs. Poor kid, I ate some of his pancakes, too. I know, you think I’m a lousy father. But hey, AJ said he can’t finish all the pancakes anyway. And besides, I fetched him lots of fruits, as ordered by his mama who was on my cellphone whispering instructions from her workplace.
I felt bloated like a sea lion on the way home, so I skipped lunch.
At 3:15 p.m., I reluctantly left AJ to our baby-sitter, a Guatemalan named Eloisa With tears welling on his big brown eyes, AJ clung to me like wheels on a car. But papa had to work, and I left, heavy-hearted. Ah, life in these United States.
I arrived All-State Arena at 4:20 p.m. I went to my seat—Ringside Row 4, Seat 4—at about 5:10 p.m, just in time to see Mercito Gesta clobber Carlos Madrid.
At 7:45 p.m., I was live on dyAB with Bob Malzarte and lawyer Haide Acuna for the blow-by-blow of the Rodel Mayol fight. It was a disaster, the fight. Made me wanna cry. (Read my column somewhere in this page).
More tomorrow….Deadline beckons..My editor, the handsome Mike Limpag, is spilling his coffee in a cold newsroom….See you here, tomorrow. (Homer D. Sayson)
