Tuesday, August 07, 2007 The judge is now third man on ring
WILL it be a déjà vu for Z “The Dream” Gorres?
One of the officials who voted for his defeat Raul Caiz, was appointed as the referee for his IBF super flyweight title eliminator against Gerson Guerrero of Mexico in one of the featured fight of the World Cup Boxing on Aug. 11 (Aug. 12 RP Time) in Arco Arena of Sacramento, California, USA.
Caiz is the same person who “robbed” Gorres of the victory against Fernando Montiel in the WBO superflyweight championship fight last Feb. 24 here in Cebu City.
Caiz, along with Chuck Giampa scored against Gorres with 111-115 and 112-114 respectively with the help of the unwanted two-point deduction from Puerto Rican descent New Yorker Samuel Viruet who was the third man of the ring.
However, Caiz is not the worry for the moment, as the wait for Gorres’s appearance in the 7-man Philippine Team against seven counterparts from Mexico will end up today.
American eye specialist Dr. Steven Steinschriber, who performed the laser eye surgery to correct the tear on Gorres’ eye, will make another check-up, this time to see if the Cebuano fighter is fit to fight in the scheduled 12-round fight.
“We will be waiting for the results of the eye check-up. We are given 90 percent hope that Gorres will be fit to fight but that will depend on the results of the check-up. I’m hoping it will be ok for him (Gorres) to fight,” said ALA Boys mentor Antonio Lopez Aldeguer told Sun.Star-Cebu last night.
Despite the discovery of Gorres’s eye problem, the 24-year-old Mandauehanon continued his training in anticipation for the reversal of the order to forego the Guerrero fight.
In a related development, the Team Philippines has formally folded up their training camp at the Wild Card Gym in Hollywood, Los Angeles, toward the final week of the World Cup.
With fight night just six days away, the Filipino fighters are now tapering down to their stipulated weight limits doing only light physical training to keep them in tip-top shape.
“Their conditions are very good. They’re ready to rumble,” said Aldeguer. (RCM)
