Mensa to hold qualifying exams

MENSA Philippines–Cebu Chapter will be holding a qualifying session on Aug. 19 at the Blue Room, 3rd floor i1 bldg. Asiatown IT Park in Lahug, Cebu City.

Mensa is an international organization for people with high intelligence quotient (IQs).

The sole criterion for membership in Mensa is to score within the top two percent (98th percentile and up) of the general population, through an accepted and properly supervised qualifying test.

Mensa started in 1946 with two British barristers, Roland Berrill and Lance Ware, who decided to form a society for people with high IQs.

Mensa is Latin for table, which symbolizes a round table where members can meet and exchange views as equals, by first bringing people together and then allowing actions to follow.

However, Mensa is not an advocate of any cause, nor stands for any religious, political, economic or any other ideal but it is plainly a venue for people of different beliefs and ideologies to get together, interact and develop richer, broader perspectives and points of view.

Organizations

Mensa Philippines is an emerging national organization under the auspices of Mensa International Ltd.

The society has over 100,000 members in over 80 countries worldwide. R. Buckminster Fuller, actress Geena Davis, John Cleese (Monty Python), Scott Adams (Dilbert), Matt Groening (Simpsons), Jean Auel (Clan of the Cave Bear) and science-fiction writer Isaac Asimov and the youngest Mensan two-year-old Georgia Brown are some of the more prominent Mensa members.

Pre-registration

The qualifier is a culture-fair type of test that is often referred to as “abstract reasoning.” It does not test math or language skills.

Pre-registration is required for the 30-minute qualifying exams at 9 a.m., 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 2 p.m.

Examinees without pre-registration may be accommodated on a first-come-first-served basis. Requirements are a valid identification card with photo and testing fee of P400 (or the discounted P150 rate for undergraduates).

More information regarding Mensa and Mensa’s qualifying tests may be found at www.mensa.org, www.pilipinas.mensa.org, ph.mensa.org/qualify.htm.

To register for the Mensa test, one may e-mail gbtojong

@gmail.com with the subject “Aug 19 Mensa qualifier.”

Applicants need to give their name, age, contact number and preferred time slot. For inquiries, one may call John Binamira at 0922-3520722, Bimbo Bael at 0920-9200127 and Glen Tojong at 0921-9902303.

Practice tests, puzzles and other resources are also available at www.mensa.org.uk,mensa/global/resource.html or dmoz.org/Society/Organizations.
