Seares: Jamby’s dig,Migz’ bottom By Pachico A. Seares News Sense
SEN. Jamby Madrigal's comment about Sen. Migz Zubiri during a recent Senate session touched some raw, prudish nerves.
Jamby said she didn't mind Migz not facing her while she interpellated him because, she said, in an answer immortalized in Senate records, she liked to look at his "nice bottom."
She later told reporters "bottom" is proper, compared to "butt" or "ass."
"Bottom" is British, she said, as if saying it with a stiff upper lip would banish any impropriety.
Sen. Chiz Escudero earlier asked what it meant when a news headline said anti-Gloria senators were "livid" about Senate President Manny Villar's committee postings.
"Livid" is British too, Jamby said. "Livid" may be less harsh than "furious" but even to a non-senatorial mind, it means the same thing: "pale, white, or red, as livid with rage." Cushion to impact
Does saying it in British or some vaguely strange word lessen the force? It may, but not for long. Soon, knowledge ignites fuse and, boom: "Double insult. You used an ugly word and it's a word I couldn't quickly understand."
Migz didn't flinch when critics said he cheated to get his Senate seat. Now, hearing Jamby, he blushed, a news report in a broadsheet said.
They say the Government spends millions of pesos for Senate upkeep. Still, was anyone counting precious time as Jamby expressed admiration of Zubiri's anatomy?
Let it go. Jamby's dig had nothing to do with general welfare, national interest, or public health. But it offered a light, memorable legislative scene, which must be rare in that august hall where some members are totally pompous, ah, bottoms.
