Saturday, August 18, 2007 Mandaue to field strong team in Guv Cup
THE Mandaue City government has thrown its full support to the Governor Gwen Garcia Unity Volleyball Cup that will start next month.
Not only will Mandaue be supporting a team, but it will make sure that it sends a highly competitive squad for the Guv Cup.
For this, a two-day tryout will be held at the Mandaue City Sports Complex this Sunday. All Mandauehanons are welcome to join.
The tryout, which is being coordinated by Mayor Jonas Cortes' runningmate Glenn Bercede, will be conducted by highly-touted coach Grace Antigua, who is a Mandaue City resident.
Strong team
Apart from Antigua, who is a Cebu Sports Hall of Famer, Sherry Cortes and Madeline Pacquibot are also members of the choosing committee.
“I have been instructed by Mayor Jonas Cortes to form a strong team for this GUV Cup event that is why we're holding this tryouts. I hope our volleyball players will come and join because the pride of Mandauehanons is at stake here,” said Bercede.
For more information, interested parties may call/text Coach Eddie Ybañez of the M. Lhuillier Sports Development Foundation (MLSDF) at 0926-7319004 or Bercede at 0917-3218858.

Aside from volleyball, plans are already in the works for the formation of the under 21 basketball team, which will be representing Mandaue in the upcoming inter-city basketball tournament. The project is the brainchild of Basketball Association of the Philippines-Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas Cebu province director Lorenzo "Chao" Sy. (MCB)
